Your Bio

Jim Urbach was born and raised in New Jersey. He attended Williams College and graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. After two years at Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, he completed his orthopedic residency at University of Pittsburgh. Following his tour of duty as Chief of Orthopedics at Lyster Army Hospital, Ft. Rucker, Alabama he moved to Florida and practiced his specialty in the greater Orlando area for 27 years.

In the early 1980's Jim became enamored with scenic photography and travel. Since 1992 he has found Nature and Wildlife Photography more challenging. To this end his travels have included 15 trips to Alaska, 5 safaris to Africa and other trips to France, Greece, Norway and Denmark. In 2006 he traveled to Japan, India and Nepal. He returned to Antarctica in January 2008 and visited Iceland for the first time in June. He has also traveled extensively throughout the U.S. His U.S. trips have included California, New England, New Mexico, Utah, Montana, Arizona and Texas, as well as Canada at least 12 times in recent years. Please check back from time to time as Jim is constantly adding more images.

2012 Snowy Owls : I spent 4 1/2 days in February at Boundary Bay, BC, Canada photographing these magnificent creatures in all sorts of weather..golden afternoon light, fog , drizzle and just loved all the time I spent there. In less than one mile I counted 27 owls. There were also northern harriers and short eared owls to photograph. I also spent some time with Tim Zurowski and Mike Wooding. They were so generous in sharing their time and locations with me. All images here are but 1600 pixels on the longest side and 5 x 7 inch prints can be made from these. Animals of Montana 2009 : All images were taken at Animals of Montana in January 2009. Thanks to Troy Hyde for training these creatures so well. I used a 1DM3 Canon camera and mostly a 70-200 IS f4 lens with a 1.4x teleconverter and to a lesser degree a 300IS f2.8 plus 1.4x. Although I did bring a tripod, I found I liked the freedom and flexibility of hand holding and being able to respond and change my position to be at eye level to these maginificent creatures. This proved to be a tremendous advantage in capturing images. All images are at least 50 MB in size and can be ordered as large as 16x 24 inches on request.

Barrow Alaska 2010 : I went to Barrow Alaska in June 2010 joining Mathew Studebaker and Brian Zwiebel on one fantastic workshop. For a solid week everyone wore light weight chest high waders. We walked over frozen tundra, snow, ice and waded and knelt in icy water to get images. The opportunities were numerous. This was my 13th trip to Alaska. Snail Kites : Images from Lake "Toho" taken from 2005 thru 2011. Magnificent raptors. The male adults are fully gray on top with a red eye. The first image is an immature male while the second image shows the full mature plumage.The adult females have a lighter head as seen in images 11-13. Young juveniles can be seen in images 14 and 15. I have one early nest image with 2 young chicks. Getting clean perched birds can be very difficult while flight images are far more frequent. In all the years I have captured but 2 images showing the snatch of the snail from the water. Lake "Toho" is a large lake and these kites nest in different locations each year. Image 85 shows a kite perched on the Endanged Snail Kite nesting sign posted throughout the areas where these kites nest. By temporarily placing a natural perch in the top of these signs one can get these kites on a natural perch. Enjoy viewing

2012 Pileated Woodpeckers : All images taken in April 2012 locally in central Florida. The nest was less than 18 feet off the ground but never in good light and trying to get flight images was difficult and I had to use high ISOs to capture these speedy bullets as the adults left the nest. 2012 Swallow-tailed Kites : All images taken in 2012 at an undisclosed nest site as well as an undisclosed roost site. I went to both sites over a 3 month span and hope that I find them again in future years. Until this year I had never seen a nest in Florida and did not know they bred here. Until the roost was discovered I never knew they swooped down to drink. I guessed that less than 1 % partook of this activity. A friend of mind hopes to be able to offer trips to the remote roost site once he has his captains license All images shown here are at 1600 pixels on the longest side. Cambridge Bay 2011 : I joined David Hemmings for a workshop in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut 6/29-7/10/2011. It is located at latitude 69 degrees my second trip to the high artic. Barrow is at latitude 71. There was a lot of snow and ice initially which really helped bring the king eiders in closer. David's close friend Jim Richards helped find so many nesting birds. So often we would find a nest with eggs but days later it had been totally abandoned. My main goal was to photograph snowy owl chicks but unfortunately the roads to Mt Pelly were washed out. Part of our group did get fantastic images of yellow-billed loons but no matter how many ponds we searched in succeeding days we never came upon them. May head back in 2012 if the roads are good and chicks are born. Overall it was a great trip thanks to David's hard efforts. I used a Canon 1DM4 mostly with a 1DM3 backup. 2012 January Texas Birds : I went to my 4th Alan Murphy workshop at Laguna Seca Ranch and met 4 other dedicated photgraphers. The ranch owner Gene was most helpful and even removed whole trees if Alan thought this would help our images. Alan was super as always, educating and teaching all how to create perches artistically and how to attract birds to these perches. Our Motley Crew did bond very well. I also spent a day before hand at Santa Clara Ranch and a day after at the Martin Ranch. Bird images from Laguna Seca are listed only by bird names. All images are posted at just 1600 pixels on the longest side but are at least 60 MB insize. If images larger than 5x7 wish to be purchased please contact me so a full large Jpeg can be sent to Smugmug.

Snowy Owls 2010 : I flew into Montreal in January 2010 and met Marc Latremouille who lead a small group of photographers. All images here are of one most cooperative female snowy owl who was a determined hunter. Fortunately we had only one day of harsh bright sunlight The images taken on many cloudy days wtih white out conditions proved to be the best. I shot with both 1DM3 and 1DM2N camera and a 500 lens on a tripod and 70-200 +/- 1.4x hand held All images here are at most 1600 pixels on the longest side so if you want prints 8x12 or larger, please email me so I can submit a full resolution image to Smugmug

2006 Sandhill Crane : These images of one and two day old chicks were taken near my home in Sanford, Florida. I visited the nest for 20 consecutive days, both early AM and late PM. Finally on Sunday morning I observed two adults at the next site and when the one on the nest got up, there was the first chick and one egg in full view. 2008Alaska Bears, Puffins, Seals : What a great trip with Chas Glatzer( www.shootthelight.com). Many thanks to Angela and Perry, Darryl, Bob, and Gary at Katmai Wilderness Lodge on Kukak Bay. Yes I know there are too too many bears but they were fantastic. Never once a charge or threatening gesture and at times they came within 15 feet of us. I marveled at our ability each day to be so close to these magnificent powerful creatures who went on with their fishing and let us be so close to them. Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica 2008 : I feel very lucky to have visited this area of the world for a second time. I found the chicks I had hoped to see, but never expected to see a snowstorm on Paulet Island. Many thanks to Peter Harrison, the most spell binding story teller I have ever heard, Shirley Metz, his lovely, capable and accomplished wife, Mike Messick and Jonathan Rossouw of Zeagrahms, the Clipper Adventurer staff and my fellow adventurers for making this trip so memorable. 2009 Homer, Alaska Eagles : All images taken in Homer Alaska in March 2009 as I joined Chas Glatzer again for a fantastic workshop. Homer does not permit feeding of eagles by individuals any longer. By renting a fishing boat and crossing Kachemack Bay, we were able to toss fish from the boat . All of these fascinating fishing images were taken with a 70-200 lens and 1DMIII camera. The non fishing flight images were taken near Jean's yard as were the finch images. The ducks were taken down on the beach at Land's End. Of course all participants got along so well. It was great to meet so many new fellow photographers Almost all can be printed up to 24x 36 inches. You must contact me so I can arrange printing and pricing of any image.

Iceland 2008 : I was fortunate to join Chas Glatzer (www.shootthelight.com) in June 2008 along with 9 others and Yann (Yann@internet.is) a bird naturalist and driver. What a fabulous experience. At Latrabjarg, we could almost reach out and touch puffins, At Floi, we were among the magnificent red-throated loons with their chicks. The stark landscapes, highly friendly people and superb wildlife opportunities make this a great place to revisit. Over 80% of these images are saved as at least 65MB tiffs so large size prints can be purchased. Email me requests for pricing. Red-shouldered Hawk nest : All images taken the spring of 2010 at Lake Sylvan Park in Seminole County less than a mile from my home. The nest was about 60' off the ground with limited potential clean lines of sight because of all the moss hanging down. Most remakable was how quickly the chicks grew up. One did not make it but the 2 seen here did fledge successfully. All i mages taken with a 500 IS plus 2x teleconverter, f9 aperature plus flash and a better beamer. Just wish a cherry picker was allowed

Black Skimmers : All images were taken in the July 2009 on 4 trips to a black skimmer nesting site. I will add images from my 2008 trips to this same nest site shortly. In 2008 the chicks were born a bit later and the adults aggressively flew at you if you got too close providing many opportunities for dramatic flight images captured with my 70-200 f4 lens. This year all birds were far more tolerant and the 400 f5.6 lens proved to be my favorite lens. Many images were taken lying prone on the sand. The young chick images have ben cropped, otherwise most are full frame and at least 60MB in size. 2013 Red-shouldered Hawk : These images were taken at a remote horse ranch. Over years this fully wild male red-shouldered hawk has learned to fly down to food left on a fence post and over the past 2 1/2 years has become comfortable taking food from a gloved hand. This hawk responds to a this remarkable lady's voice whistle and will fly to the barn weather vane first and after this first feeding fllies back to feed his mate in a nest. He will fly to the top of a high evergreen tree 200 yards away to announce he is ready to return and get more meat. She then will get another morsel and has to walk with her back away from her vehicle and him. Once she turns around and raises her arm he takes off flying dircectly at her taking the meat from the top of her gloved hand while in flight

2013 Great Gray Owls : I went to Ottawa in 2/2013 after finally finding a weather report indicating they were expecting 2 days of falling snow. I met up with Marc Latremouille who is an owl whisperer. The first afternoon there was full sun but great tree shadows and then the next day it was like magic.the weather prediction came true...falling snow all day. The third day the fresh snow was everwhere. I shot with my 1DM4, and either the 70-200 f4 or 300 f2.8 at least 80 percent of the time. Using the 500 on a tripod for distant static images.
